Year: 1940s WW II Rescue Boat and 2005 Art Boat

Location discovered: 3rd Street Basin

History: In 2005 a group of artist bought a WW II rescue boat who steered it into the canal and turned it into an arts center. It later turned into the SS Gay before it was abandoned after a fire and sunk. This porthole was rescued from the boat.

The Hall of Gowanus is a community-curated archive of Gowanus artifacts that was founded by Proteus Gowanus Interdisciplinary Gallery in 2007. Now under the stewardship of the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, the archive is in need of a permanent home in Gowanus.
